What to Expect At Your First Hearing Test

If you've been putting off a hearing test — whether because you're unsure what's involved or simply haven't gotten around to it — you're not alone. Many people wait years before scheduling their first appointment. The good news is that a hearing assessment is straightforward, pain-free, and typically takes no more than an hour.
It Starts With a Conversation
Before any testing begins, we'll sit down with you and ask about your hearing history. This case history review is one of the most valuable parts of the appointment. We want to understand what you've been experiencing — whether it's struggling to follow conversations in noisy environments, asking people to repeat themselves, or noticing the TV needs to be louder than it used to.
We'll also ask about your lifestyle, your work environment, and whether anyone in your family has experienced hearing loss. All of this helps us build a clear picture before we begin the clinical evaluation.
A Physical Look at Your Ears
Next, we'll examine your ear canals using a small handheld instrument. This lets us check for anything that might be affecting your hearing before we run any formal tests — things like earwax buildup, which is more common than most people realize and can have a noticeable impact on how well you hear.
If excess earwax is present, we can address that before proceeding. It's a simple step, but an important one for getting accurate results.
The Hearing Tests Themselves
You'll be seated in a soundproof booth — it's comfortable and quiet. From there, you'll listen to a series of tones and sounds through headphones and indicate when you hear them. This part of the test, called pure-tone audiometry, helps us identify the specific frequencies where your hearing may be reduced.
We'll also run speech testing, including speech-in-noise testing, which is particularly useful in real-world terms. Hearing in a quiet room and hearing in a busy restaurant are two very different things, and our assessments reflect that.
The testing itself is non-invasive and there's nothing to prepare for. You simply respond to what you hear.
Understanding Your Results
Once testing is complete, we'll walk you through your audiogram — the chart that maps out your hearing levels across different frequencies. We take the time to explain exactly what your results mean in plain terms, not clinical jargon.
If your hearing falls within a normal range, that's great news — and you'll have a baseline on record for future comparisons. If we do identify hearing loss, we'll discuss the type, degree, and what your options are. There's no pressure and no rush.
What Happens If Hearing Loss Is Found?
Depending on your results, we may recommend prescription hearing aids, further evaluation, or simply monitoring your hearing over time. If hearing aids are appropriate, we'll explain the technology available and what would suit your specific hearing profile and lifestyle.
Modern hearing aids are a far cry from what previous generations wore. Today's devices are small, discreet, and connect directly to your smartphone, TV, and other devices. Brands like Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, Signia, Widex, Unitron and others have made significant advances in how naturally sound is processed — and we work with all of the major manufacturers to find the right fit for you.
Prescription hearing aids fitted by an audiologist provide a level of personalization that off-the-shelf devices simply can't match. Your hearing loss has its own profile, and your hearing aids should be programmed to reflect that precisely.
How Long Does the Appointment Take?
A comprehensive hearing test typically takes 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your individual circumstances. You don't need a referral from your doctor to schedule — you can contact us directly.
