Getting Your Hearing Aids Ready for the Holiday Season

The holidays bring some of the year’s best listening moments: family stories around the table, a grandchild’s school concert, church services, and long phone calls with relatives who live far away. Your hearing aids work hard during these weeks, so October is a smart time to give them some attention. A check-up now means your devices are clean, comfortable, and ready well before the first gathering.
Why Fall Is a Good Time for a Check-Up
We recommend routine maintenance on your hearing aids about every six months, because regular care stops most major problems before they start. Scheduling one of those visits in October or November leaves plenty of time to handle anything we find, including a part that needs to be ordered, before travel and holiday plans fill your calendar.
Cooler weather also changes how your hearing aids behave. Moving between chilly air outside and a warm house or car can cause condensation to form inside the device, and over time that moisture can affect sound quality. Batteries and plastic parts respond to temperature shifts as well, which makes fall a natural moment to have everything looked over.
What Happens During a Repair or Maintenance Visit
When you bring your hearing aids to All About Hearing, we start by listening to what you’ve noticed. Sound that seems weaker than it used to, distortion, or whistling feedback each point us toward specific causes, and your description helps us troubleshoot efficiently.
From there, a typical visit focuses on a few areas:
- Cleaning wax and debris. Earwax can build up in the microphone and speaker openings and gradually reduce performance. We clean these openings with suction and replace wax filters as needed.
- Removing moisture. We use a Redux drying system to draw moisture out of the device, which is especially helpful as temperatures cool.
- Checking the battery door. On hearing aids that use disposable batteries, the battery door gets opened and closed often, sometimes every night. Hinges can loosen and contacts can wear or corrode, which may cause sound that cuts in and out.
- Inspecting tubing and domes. If you wear a behind-the-ear style with tubing, that tubing hardens and discolors with age, and cooler temperatures can make it stiffer. Stiff tubing may crack or pull the earpiece out of position, so we replace it when it shows wear.
- Testing performance. After cleaning, we check that your devices are working as they should and address any electronic issues we find. If a device needs more than routine care, we’ll explain what we found and provide a transparent repair estimate.
Repairs for All Major Brands
As an independent practice, we repair hearing aids from all major manufacturers, including Phonak, Oticon, Signia, Widex, Starkey, and Unitron. We use genuine parts, which helps maintain the quality and lifespan of your devices. Most repairs are completed within a few days, and we offer same-day options for urgent issues. If you’d like to know whether your plan covers a repair, our team can help you check your insurance coverage. You can read more about what we offer on our hearing aid repair page.
Simple Habits That Help Between Visits
A few daily habits go a long way during the colder months, and they’re easy to keep up when you’re visiting family or traveling:
- Wipe your hearing aids with a soft, dry cloth each night and brush away any wax.
- Store them overnight in a dry, safe place away from a steamy bathroom. If you use disposable batteries, leave the battery door open so moisture can escape.
- Keep spare batteries, domes, and wax filters on hand, and pack them in your carry-on bag if you’ll be flying.
- If you wear rechargeable hearing aids, pack the charger and confirm it’s working before you leave.
- Remove hats and scarves carefully so they don’t pull a device out of your ear.
