Does Humana Insurance Cover Hearing Aids?

Your hearing is more important to you than you might think. Those with a hearing loss don’t just miss out on magical everyday sounds in their local environment.

They can also lose contact with loved ones, as great hearing is essential for effective communication. In addition, hearing loss can have long-term health consequences for those who don’t seek professional help for their symptoms.

Today, researchers know there is a link between hearing loss and cognitive conditions, such as dementia. Hearing aids are one treatment option that can reduce the risk of developing these destructive health conditions.

So why do some people wait years before seeking the right kind of help?

A critical reason is that they don’t know if their insurance plans will cover their hearing care needs. To be honest, this isn’t an easy question to answer, as it can depend on someone’s age and health insurance plan type, among other crucial variables.

But to break this down for those who are concerned, I’ve put together this guide on Humana hearing aid coverage so you can find out if it pays for hearing aids and what other benefits you are entitled to.

Before we do that, let’s take a moment to consider Medicare coverage, since most older adults are already eligible to take advantage of the benefits offered.

Medicare Plan Coverage
The vast number of hearing loss patients qualify for Medicare coverage. The reason for this is that at least one in three people between 65 and 74 have hearing loss, and almost half of those who are ages 75 and over have some trouble hearing.

It is critical to understand that Medicare does not offer coverage for hearing aid treatment, but many health insurance companies offer supplemental plans to help make up the coverage deficit.

Does Humana Cover Hearing Aids?
Humana health insurance alone does not help cover the cost of hearing aids. However, the company offers three different levels of preferred provider organization (PPO) options to help offset the cost of your hearing aids.

HumanaChoice (PPO)
With all three levels of HumanaChoice Medicare Advance PPO plans you enjoy the same benefits, including:

  • $45 co-payment for Medicare-covered benefits
  • No co-payment for standard exams (one annually)
  • No co-payment for hearing aid fittings and assessments (three visits per year)
  • Authorization required for hearing assessments
  • Hearing aid co-payment of $399 (advanced level instruments) or $699 (premium level instruments), maximum of two per year

Out-of-network coverage on all plans is unchanged in relation to non-Medicare-covered hearing care and hearing aids. However, you may be eligible to receive a 40 percent coinsurance payment for hearing assessments that Medicare covers.

Non-Medicare Plans
It’s not easy to find hearing aid coverage with private insurance companies—the primary reason being that most people in need of this technology can access resources via Medicare. But, crucially, it’s not impossible—and there are ways to access partial coverage, discounts, and benefits, which can all help you to step into the right technology.

The good news is that there is Humana insurance coverage available for those ages 18 and under, since Texas state laws require all insurance policies to offer hearing aids and hearing care coverage to that age group.

In addition, certain variables found in plans can include co-payment, deductibles, and coinsurance for coverage of children, as well as optional riders that provide benefits for adults.

And if your Humana policy doesn’t cover the cost of hearing aid treatments, then different options, such as member discounts and specialized programs, could still help you in meeting the costs.
